# Switzerland in January 2027: Weather, Skiing, Events & a 7-Day Plan

> January is deep winter in Switzerland: the cities hover around freezing, with highs near 3°C (38°F), while the ski resorts are fully open and the snow is usually reliable above about 1,500 m (4,900 ft). Once the New Year holidays end around January 6, the slopes and trains get quieter until the February school holidays. The month's big events are the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen (January 15–17, 2027), the Lucerne light festival and the Château-d'Oex balloon festival (January 23–31, 2027).

January is the month Switzerland is most reliably white. The ski resorts are running every lift, the snow has settled into a solid base, and the mountain villages look the way they do on the chocolate boxes. Down in the cities, it's cold and often grey, which is exactly why locals head up to the sun on weekends.

The month comes in two halves. Until about January 6, the Christmas and New Year holidays keep the resorts full. After that, the crowds thin out until the February school holidays, and that window is one of the best-value times of the whole ski season.

## January at a glance

| | Early January (1–6) | Mid to late January (7–31) |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Coldest weeks; fog in the lowlands | Cold, often sunny in the mountains |
| Snow | Usually good above 1,500 m (4,900 ft) | Usually the best base of the season |
| Crowds | Holiday peak | Quieter until February |
| Prices | High | Often lower |
| Big events | New Year, Three Kings' Day | Adelboden, Lauberhorn, light festivals, balloons |

## The weather

On the Swiss Plateau, around Zurich, Bern, Basel and Geneva, January highs are usually around 3°C (38°F), and nights dip a few degrees below freezing. A lid of low cloud, the famous fog, often sits over the lowlands for days. Escape it by going up: above about 1,000 to 1,500 m (3,300 to 4,900 ft), the sky is often blue.

In the resorts, it's properly cold. Expect around −5 to −10°C (14 to 23°F) on the upper slopes on a clear morning, and colder on the wind-exposed summits. Daylight is short, with sunset around 5 pm, so start early.

> **Tip:** Pack thin layers rather than one heavy coat: the trains, cable cars and restaurants are well heated, and you'll be peeling off and putting on layers all day.
## Skiing in January

January is a safe month to book a ski trip. The high resorts, Zermatt, Saas-Fee, St. Moritz and Verbier, are the surest bets for snow, and the Jungfrau region and Adelboden usually have good cover by now. Our [best ski resorts in Switzerland](https://swisswander.com/best-ski-resorts-in-switzerland/) guide compares them, and if you hold an Epic or Ikon pass, see which Swiss resorts it covers in our [Epic Pass](https://swisswander.com/epic-pass-switzerland/) and [Ikon Pass](https://swisswander.com/ikon-pass-switzerland/) guides.

If you live in Switzerland, the quiet weekdays after Three Kings' Day are the moment to use a season pass: the [Magic Pass](https://swisswander.com/magic-pass-guide/) covers more than 100 smaller resorts, mostly in French-speaking Switzerland.

## What's on in January 2027

- **Three Kings' Day (January 6):** bakeries sell the Dreikönigskuchen, a ring of sweet bread rolls with a small king hidden inside. Whoever finds it wears the paper crown.
- **Adelboden World Cup (January 9–10):** men's giant slalom and slalom on the steep Chuenisbärgli, with one of the loudest crowds of the season.
- **Lauberhorn races, Wengen (January 15–17):** the longest downhill on the World Cup calendar, under the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Tickets are sold online, and Wengen's hotels fill up early.
- **Lilu, Lucerne (January 14–24):** free light installations across the old town and the lakefront every evening.
- **Murten Light Festival (January 20–31):** projections on the medieval walls of Murten, between Bern and Fribourg.
- **Snow Polo World Cup, St. Moritz (January 22–24):** polo on the frozen lake. Read our [St. Moritz ski guide](https://swisswander.com/st-moritz-skiing-guide/) to make a weekend of it.
- **Hot-air balloon festival, Château-d'Oex (January 23–31):** nine days of balloons over the snowy Pays-d'Enhaut, about an hour from Montreux by train.

## Without skis

You don't need to ski to enjoy January. Ride the [Glacier Express](https://swisswander.com/glacier-express-guide/), which runs all winter between Zermatt and St. Moritz, go up to the [Jungfraujoch](https://swisswander.com/jungfraujoch-guide/), which is open year-round, or rent a sled: Switzerland has hundreds of sled runs, and our [sledding guide](https://swisswander.com/sledding-in-switzerland/) lists the best. Winter walking trails are groomed in most resorts. For more ideas, see [Switzerland in winter for non-skiers](https://swisswander.com/switzerland-in-winter-for-non-skiers/).

## Soak after

January is the best month for a thermal bath: steaming water at around 35°C (95°F), snow on the edge of the pool and mountains all around. Leukerbad, in Valais, has the largest thermal baths in the Alps, and in the Engadine, Bogn Engiadina in Scuol is an easy add-on to a St. Moritz trip. Our [thermal baths guide](https://swisswander.com/thermal-baths-switzerland/) compares prices and opening hours.

## A 7-day plan for January

| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lucerne | Arrive in Zurich, train to Lucerne (about 50 min), old town; Lilu lights if your dates match |
| 2 | Lucerne | Boat to Vitznau (winter timetable) or train to Arth-Goldau, cogwheel train up the Rigi, mineral bath at Rigi Kaltbad |
| 3 | Wengen | Train via Interlaken to Wengen (about 2.5 hours), first afternoon on the slopes |
| 4 | Wengen | Ski the Jungfrau region, or the train to the Jungfraujoch |
| 5 | Leukerbad | Train and bus to Leukerbad (about 3 hours), evening in the thermal baths |
| 6 | Zermatt | Bus and train to Zermatt (about 2 hours), Gornergrat or skiing under the Matterhorn |
| 7 | Zermatt | Last morning on the snow, then train to Zurich or Geneva to fly home (about 3 to 4 hours) |

Dates around January 15–17? Book Wengen early and watch the Lauberhorn, or swap days 3 and 4 for Grindelwald, a short train ride away. With an extra day, take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The [Swiss Travel Pass](https://swisswander.com/swiss-travel-pass-guide/) covers most of these trains, and gives discounts on many mountain railways.

## Where to stay

Ski resorts are busy over New Year, then calmer until February. Book Wengen for the Lauberhorn weekend and St. Moritz for the Snow Polo several months ahead; otherwise, January gives you more choice than any other ski month. Pick a hotel close to the station or the lifts, because carrying skis and suitcases on icy streets is no fun.

Our guides to [where to stay in Zermatt](https://swisswander.com/where-to-stay-in-zermatt/) and [where to stay in Grindelwald](https://swisswander.com/where-to-stay-in-grindelwald/) compare the areas, and the [best ski hotels in Switzerland](https://swisswander.com/best-ski-hotels-switzerland/) lists the spa hotels on the slopes.

## Our tips

- **Travel after January 6:** the same resort, fewer people and often lower prices.
- **Chase the sun:** when the lowlands are grey, the mountains are often bright. Check the forecast for altitude, not just the city.
- **Book the big weekends early:** Lauberhorn, Adelboden and Snow Polo fill the nearby hotels.
- **Mind the short days:** lifts usually close around 4 to 4:30 pm. Plan the thermal bath or a fondue for the evening.

## FAQ

**Q: Is January a good time to visit Switzerland?**
A: Yes, if you want snow. The ski resorts are fully open, the villages are white, and after the New Year week the slopes and hotels are often quieter than at Christmas or in February. The trade-offs are short days, cold cities and grey weather in the lowlands.

**Q: What is the weather like in Switzerland in January?**
A: January is the coldest month. In Zurich, Bern and Geneva, highs are usually around 3°C (38°F) and nights a little below freezing, often under low cloud. Mountain resorts are colder but frequently sunny above the fog.

**Q: Is there snow in Switzerland in January?**
A: Almost always in the mountains: resorts above about 1,500 m (4,900 ft), like Zermatt, Saas-Fee, St. Moritz, Wengen and Verbier, usually have good cover. In the cities, snow comes and goes and rarely lasts.

**Q: What events are there in Switzerland in January 2027?**
A: The Adelboden World Cup races (January 9–10), the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen (January 15–17), the Lilu light festival in Lucerne (January 14–24), the Murten Light Festival (January 20–31), Snow Polo on the frozen lake in St. Moritz (January 22–24) and the hot-air balloon festival in Château-d'Oex (January 23–31).

**Q: Is Switzerland cheaper in January?**
A: The weeks after the New Year holidays are often cheaper than Christmas, New Year and February, when Swiss and European families go skiing. Ski passes with dynamic pricing also tend to cost less on quiet weekdays, so book early and compare dates.
