Oeschinensee is the turquoise lake you've seen on every Switzerland Instagram account, and unlike many viral spots, it's even better in person. The lake sits at 1,578 m (5,177 ft) under a horseshoe of cliffs and waterfalls above the village of Kandersteg.
The two ways to do it
The easy version (1–1.5 hours round trip): take the gondola up, follow the wide path down to the lakeshore, eat at the Berghotel, walk back. Fine for kids and anyone with sneakers.
The Panorama Trail (about 9 km loop, ~500 m climbing): from the lake, climb the trail toward Heuberg on the north side. You'll get the elevated view looking down on the lake — that's the photo. Continue on the loop and drop back to the gondola station. The trail is narrow in places with drop-offs, so wear real hiking shoes.
When to go
June to mid-October. The lake is often still frozen into early June, and the upper trail can hold snow later than that. Early morning (first gondola) beats the midday tour-bus wave. In October, the larches around the lake turn gold — see our fall hikes guide.
Trail tips
- Bring cash or a card — both work at the Berghotel and gondola.
- Swiss trail colors: yellow signs = easy hiking path, white-red-white = mountain trail (the Panorama Trail). Signposted times are accurate for fit walkers.
- Mountain coaster: there's a summer toboggan at the gondola top station — a good bribe for kids.
Make it a hike & soak day
Kandersteg itself has no big spa hotel. The smart move is to base yourself 30–45 minutes away and finish in warm water. The Cambrian in Adelboden has a heated outdoor infinity pool facing the mountains — arguably the best post-hike soak in the Bernese Oberland. If you're based in Interlaken, the Victoria-Jungfrau has a 5,500 m² spa.

How do you pronounce Oeschinensee?
Roughly 'UR-shin-en-zay'. 'See' is German for lake.
Can you swim in Oeschinensee?
Swimming is allowed but the water is glacier-fed and cold even in August. Most people paddle or rent a rowboat instead.
Do you need to reserve the Oeschinensee gondola?
On summer weekends, booking a time slot online is strongly recommended. Lines can exceed an hour without one.
Is the Oeschinensee hike hard?
The walk from the gondola to the lake is easy and mostly downhill. The upper Panorama Trail is moderate, with narrow sections and a steady climb, but no technical scrambling.
Can you do Oeschinensee as a day trip from Interlaken?
Yes. By train it's about 1 hour to Kandersteg via Spiez, making it one of the best day hikes from Interlaken.
