Switzerland Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Best Cities & Where to Soak After

Swiss Christmas markets are smaller and calmer than Germany's, set in medieval old towns, lakeshores and below abbeys, with mulled wine, raclette, Läckerli and handmade ornaments. And because this is Switzerland, there's almost always a thermal bath or spa hotel less than an hour away. So here's the plan: browse the market in the afternoon cold, then warm up in hot water.
Dates below are the 2026 dates announced so far. Markets sometimes adjust them, so check each official site before you book.

Practical tips
- Bring a few francs in cash for small stalls, although cards and phones work almost everywhere.
- Mugs carry a deposit. Your mulled-wine mug costs a few francs extra. Return it or keep it as a souvenir.
- Dress for 30–40°F and damp lake air. Gloves and warm boots make all the difference.
- Go on a weekday afternoon. Weekend evenings get crowded, especially in Zurich and Basel.
FAQ
When do the Christmas markets open in Switzerland in 2026?
The first big markets open in mid-to-late November: Zurich on November 19, Montreux on November 20, Basel on November 26. Most close on December 23 or 24; a few, such as Basel's Wienachtsdorf and Lugano's market, run into early January.
What is the best Christmas market in Switzerland?
Basel is the classic answer, with two squares in the old town and the Münster lit up above them. Montreux has the most dramatic setting on Lake Geneva, and Zurich has the most variety.
Are Swiss Christmas markets open on December 25?
Almost all close on December 24 at the latest. Plan your market days before Christmas Eve.
Can I visit several Swiss Christmas markets in one trip?
Easily. Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and Bern are each about an hour apart by train, and Montreux is about 2.5 hours from Zurich. A Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card makes hopping between cities simple.
Is December a good time to visit Switzerland if you don't ski?
Yes. Christmas markets, thermal baths in the snow, scenic trains and festive old towns make December one of the best months for non-skiers.
