Short answer

For a first trip to Switzerland, the hotels travelers choose again and again are mid-range, family-run places in the most iconic spots: Hotel Schützen and Hotel Staubbach facing Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen, Hotel Alpina in car-free Mürren, Hotel Des Alpes by the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, and Hotel Adler, Felix or Limmathof in Zurich's old town. Location beats luxury: all are within a short walk of the station.

Here's the pattern behind the hotels first-time visitors keep booking in Switzerland: they're not palaces. They're mid-range, often family-run, and in exactly the right place: facing a waterfall, next to a covered bridge, or in the old-town lanes five minutes from the train. In a country where you'll travel by rail, location beats luxury every time.

These ten follow that rule, and together they cover the classic first route: Zurich, Lucerne, the Lauterbrunnen valley, and Geneva for the flight home.

Lauterbrunnen valley: waterfalls from your window

The Lauterbrunnen valley is the image most people have of Switzerland before they come: sheer cliffs, 72 waterfalls, and Staubbach Falls dropping almost 300 m (nearly 1,000 ft) right behind the village. It's 20 minutes by train from Interlaken, and every hiking and cable-car day in the area starts here. Our Mürren–Gimmelwald–Lauterbrunnen hike links all three places below.

Hotel Schützen

The family favorite. It sits below Staubbach Falls, most of its superior rooms look straight at the water, and there's a playground and a restaurant on site, so evenings with kids are easy. Ask for a falls-view room when you book: it's the whole point.

How to book these well

  • Book Lauterbrunnen and Mürren first. These are small hotels in small villages, and summer and Christmas fill up months ahead.
  • Ask for the view. In Lauterbrunnen, a falls-view room makes the stay; in Lucerne, ask for the river side.
  • Check what's included. Breakfast and a local guest card (free buses and trams in many towns) add real value.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Switzerland for the first time?

Split your trip between Lucerne (old town, lake), the Lauterbrunnen valley or Grindelwald (mountains), and Zurich or Geneva for your arrival and departure nights. Stay within walking distance of the station in each place.

What is the best hotel in Lauterbrunnen?

For a waterfall view, Hotel Schützen and Hotel Staubbach both face Staubbach Falls. Hotel Schützen is better for families (playground, family rooms); Hotel Staubbach is the historic choice, one of the village's first hotels.

Is it better to stay in Lauterbrunnen or Mürren?

Lauterbrunnen is easier, with direct trains from Interlaken and slightly lower prices. Mürren is car-free and up on the cliff edge, with bigger views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, but every trip starts with a cable car.

Where should I stay in Lucerne?

On the Reuss river in the old town. Hotel Des Alpes is right by the Chapel Bridge and three minutes from the station; Boutique Hotel KARL is quieter, on the river below the Musegg wall.
