Month by month

January to March: deep winter

This is peak ski season, with the most reliable snow. Mountain villages like Zermatt, Grindelwald and St. Moritz are at their most beautiful. Valley cities hover around freezing, about 30–40°F (−1 to 4°C). February is busy with European school holidays, so book early. Best ski resorts · Winter for non-skiers.

April and May: the in-between

Skiing winds down by mid-April (glaciers last longer), and high trails stay snowy until June. It's a good time for cities, the lakes and lower walks like the Lavaux vineyards, with fewer visitors and lower prices. Some mountain lifts close for maintenance in May.

June to August: summer

High trails open from mid-June as the snow melts. Meadows are full of wildflowers in June and early July. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, with warm valleys (about 70–80°F / 21–27°C) and afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains. Start hikes early. Best hikes in Switzerland.

September: the sweet spot

The weather is often stable, the lakes are still warm enough for a dip at the start of the month, lifts are open, and the crowds have gone home. If you can pick only one month, pick this one.

October: gold and quiet

In early October the larches turn gold in Valais and the Engadine, and the Lavaux vineyards are harvested. From mid-October many lifts start their annual maintenance break. Switzerland hikes in October.

November: the quiet month

It's the calmest time in the mountains: many lifts are closed, and the Glacier Express pauses until December 5. It's a good month for cities, museums and thermal baths. Christmas markets open from around November 19. Thermal baths.

December: Christmas and first snow

Markets fill the old towns until December 23–24, ski resorts open through the month, and the Glacier Express runs again from December 5. The holidays between Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the winter. Switzerland in December.
