Not every Swiss hike needs a gondola. The Lavaux terraces are a different kind of beautiful: stone-walled vineyards dropping straight into Lake Geneva, with the French Alps on the other shore.

The route

From Cully, follow the yellow "Terrasses de Lavaux" signs east through the vineyards to Epesses, Dézaley, and Saint-Saphorin. The path is paved or gravel, with some steady climbs between villages. Many cellars (caveaux) open for tastings on weekends.

When to go

Fall is peak: the vines turn gold and the harvest is on. Spring is quieter and still green. Avoid midday in July and August — there's almost no shade.

Hike & soak on Lake Geneva

Le Mirador Resort & Spa sits on Mont-Pèlerin right above the vineyards, with lake views from the spa. In Montreux, the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is the belle-époque option, and in Lausanne, the Beau-Rivage Palace has a large lakefront spa. For public thermal water, Lavey-les-Bains is 40 minutes away.
