Grindelwald is a long village that follows one main street, the Dorfstrasse, along a sunny slope under the Eiger. Where you sleep decides how you start each morning: walking to the First gondola, riding the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal, or strolling up from a quiet lane with the north face outside your window. The good news is that distances are short, and free village buses connect the lot.

The village center: for a first visit
The heart of Grindelwald is the stretch of Dorfstrasse between the train station and the First gondola, about 10 minutes on foot. Most hotels, restaurants, sports shops and the tourist office are here, and the Eiger fills the view at every gap between the chalets. Staying near the First gondola means you can be on one of the first cabins up to Bachalpsee without a bus or a train.
Stay here if: it's your first time in the Jungfrau region and you want to walk to dinner and to the lifts.
Skip it if: you're arriving with a car and want free parking; spaces on the main street are limited and often charged.

Around the train station: for easy arrivals
Grindelwald's village station is the end of the line from Interlaken Ost, about 35 minutes away, with trains usually every 30 minutes. Hotels within a few minutes' walk make sense if you arrive late with heavy bags or plan day trips to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen or Lake Brienz. The bus station is next door, for the Glacier Canyon and the summer buses to Bussalp and Grosse Scheidegg.
Stay here if: you want to roll your suitcase off the train and into the lobby.
Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Grindelwald
Grindelwald
Why we picked it: Chalet-style hotel a few minutes' walk from the village station, with a 650 m² wellness area and a heated indoor pool.

Below the village: for a quiet stay with Eiger views
Below the Dorfstrasse, small lanes drop through meadows toward the Lütschine river. It's only about 10 minutes' walk back up to the station, but it feels like the countryside: cowbells, chalets and the north face of the Eiger straight ahead. This is where you'll find the more intimate hotels, the kind with a fire in the lounge and a hot tub on the terrace.
Stay here if: it's a special trip and you'd rather wake up to silence than to the main street.
Skip it if: you don't like walking uphill after dinner.
Boutique Hotel Glacier
Grindelwald
Why we picked it: 28-room boutique hotel on a quiet lane below the village, facing the Eiger; some rooms have a private outdoor hot tub, and the restaurant is known for its wine list.

Grindelwald Terminal and Grund: for Jungfraujoch
Grindelwald Terminal sits at the bottom of the valley, one stop before the village station on the train from Interlaken. It's the base of the Eiger Express, which reaches Eigergletscher in about 15 minutes; from there the Jungfrau Railway continues up to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 m (11,332 ft). The Männlichen gondola also leaves from here, for the Royal Walk and the panorama trail to Kleine Scheidegg. Nearby Grindelwald Grund is the start of the railway up to Kleine Scheidegg.
There are few restaurants around the terminal, so plan on the train or bus up to the village for dinner. The upside is the price: this is where you'll find one of the cheapest beds in Grindelwald.
Stay here if: Jungfraujoch is the reason for your trip, or you want to be first in line for the Männlichen gondola.
Eiger Lodge Grindelwald
Grindelwald
Why we picked it: Simple lodge right by the Eiger Express at Grindelwald Terminal: shared 4- and 6-bed rooms or private rooms with bathroom, breakfast included.

Up the mountain: a night above the valley
A few mountain inns sit along the lifts and trails above Grindelwald, for example around Bort, the middle station of the First gondola. Sleeping up there gives you the sunset on the Eiger and an empty trail in the morning, but you depend on the last gondola, and rooms are few. Treat it as one special night rather than your base. Book on the official tourist office website, jungfrauregion.swiss, and check the lift times for your dates.
Grindelwald or Wengen?
Wengen is Grindelwald's car-free neighbor on the other side of the Männlichen, reached by train from Lauterbrunnen. It's smaller and quieter, with views over the Lauterbrunnen valley and the Jungfrau rather than the Eiger. Choose Grindelwald for more lifts, more restaurants and a direct train from Interlaken; choose Wengen for a slower village with no cars. In winter, both share the same ski area: see our Grindelwald and Wengen skiing guide.
Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn
Wengen · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Mid-range Wengen hotel with a 33°C indoor pool — good value with Jungfrau views.
Check rates & availability →Grand Hotel Belvedere Wengen
Wengen · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Historic grand hotel in car-free Wengen, above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with spa services.

Grindelwald has no public thermal bath, so your spa is your hotel. The Belvedere and the Sunstar both have indoor pools in the village, and the Schweizerhof has a heated indoor pool and saunas. For a bigger spa day, the Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken has a 5,500 m² spa, about 35 minutes away by train.
Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa
Interlaken · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Interlaken's landmark grand hotel with a 5,500 m² spa.
Check rates & availability →Practical tips

- Guest card: if you stay overnight and pay the local visitor tax, your hotel gives you the Grindelwald guest card, with free village buses on lines 121, 122 and 123 and discounts on several lifts and sights.

Our honest take
For a first visit, book the village center, ideally between the station and the First gondola: Grindelwald is a village you enjoy on foot, and every lift is then a short walk or bus ride away. Pick Grindelwald Terminal if Jungfraujoch is your priority or your budget is tight, and save the quiet lanes below the village for a special trip. Fill your days with our things to do in Grindelwald, including a 2-day plan, and start with the easy Bachalpsee hike. Still choosing a base?
