The Lauterbrunnen valley is one long trench of cliffs and waterfalls with villages on two levels: Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg on the valley floor, and the car-free villages of Mürren, Gimmelwald and Wengen on the ledges about 800 m above. Where you sleep decides how you spend your evenings, and how much time you spend in cable cars. The distances are short, though: from any of them, you're 20 to 30 minutes from the others.

Lauterbrunnen village: for a first visit
The village strings along one main street from the station toward Staubbach Falls. Near the station, you have the supermarket, a few restaurants, the cable car to Grütschalp and Mürren directly opposite, the train up to Wengen, and the buses to Trümmelbach Falls and Stechelberg. It's the most practical base in the valley and usually the cheapest: day trips to Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lake Brienz are all simple from here.
The downside is the day traffic. Buses and visitors fill the main street in summer, and the valley floor gets less sun than the villages above it, especially in winter.
Stay here if: you want the most connections for the lowest price, or you're arriving late with heavy bags.
Skip it if: you want to wake up with a view of the Eiger and the Jungfrau; for that, go up to Mürren.
Hotel Staubbach
Lauterbrunnen
Why we picked it: One of the village's first hotels (1890s), about 500 m up the main street from the station, with balconies facing the falls.

Toward Staubbach Falls: for families and the waterfall view
Walk 10 to 15 minutes up the main street past the church and you're under Staubbach Falls, which drops 297 m (974 ft) off the cliff behind the village. This end is a little quieter, with meadows, campsites and the path that climbs behind the falls in summer. It's where you'll find the rooms with the famous view of the falls and the church.
Stay here if: you're traveling with kids, or that waterfall view from your balcony is the point of the trip.
Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen
Why we picked it: Family-friendly hotel below Staubbach Falls; most superior rooms look straight at the waterfall. Playground and restaurant.

Mürren: for the view
Mürren sits on a ledge at 1,650 m (5,413 ft), and it's the village most people picture when they think of the Lauterbrunnen valley: chalets on the edge of the cliff, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up across the void. There are no cars. You arrive by cable car to Grütschalp and the small train along the cliff edge, or by the Schilthorn cable car from Stechelberg. Once the day visitors have left, evenings are very quiet.
Mürren is the best base for the Schilthorn, the Allmendhubel funicular, the walk down to Gimmelwald and the via ferrata. In winter, it's a ski village with long runs from the Schilthorn. The Alpine Sports Center, near the station, has a public indoor pool, a whirlpool with a view and a spa.
Stay here if: it's a special trip and you want the view and the silence.
Skip it if: you plan lots of day trips outside the valley; every one starts with a cable car down.
Hotel Eiger Mürren
Mürren
Why we picked it: Family-run hotel opposite Mürren's mountain train station, with an indoor pool, saunas and views across the valley to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Closes for a few weeks in the off-season.
Check rates & availability →Hotel Alpina Mürren
Mürren
Why we picked it: Family-run hotel in car-free Mürren with Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau views and a panoramic terrace.
Check rates & availability →Gimmelwald: for a simple, slow stay
Gimmelwald is a tiny farming village between Mürren and Stechelberg, at about 1,360 m (4,460 ft), with a cable car stop on the Schilthorn line and a handful of guesthouses and a hostel. There's no nightlife and almost no shops, just hay barns, cowbells and the cliffs of the Jungfrau massif across the valley. Rooms are few, so book early and expect simple comfort. Mürren is a 45-minute walk uphill, or one cable car stop away.
Stay here if: you want the most peaceful night in the valley and don't mind basic rooms.
Wengen: for Jungfraujoch and a car-free village
Wengen is on the other side of the valley, 12 to 15 minutes up by cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen. It's car-free like Mürren but bigger, sunnier and livelier, with more hotels, restaurants and shops. The train continues to Kleine Scheidegg, where you change for Jungfraujoch, and a cable car climbs to Männlichen for the panorama trail. In winter, Wengen shares the Grindelwald-Wengen ski area and hosts the Lauberhorn World Cup races in January.
Stay here if: Jungfraujoch, the Männlichen trail or skiing is the plan, or you want a car-free village with more choice at dinner.
Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn
Wengen · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Mid-range Wengen hotel with a 33°C indoor pool — good value with Jungfrau views.
Check rates & availability →Grand Hotel Belvedere Wengen
Wengen · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Historic grand hotel in car-free Wengen, above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with spa services.
Check rates & availability →Stechelberg: for drivers
Stechelberg is the last hamlet at the head of the valley, about 15 minutes by bus from Lauterbrunnen. It has a few hotels and guesthouses, parking, and the valley station of the Schilthorn cable car, which now reaches Mürren in a few minutes on the steepest cable car in the world. It suits drivers who want to leave the car and ride up to Mürren and the Schilthorn, but there's little to do in the evening.
Soak after
The valley has no thermal bath. The best options are the indoor pool at Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn in Wengen, the public pool and spa at the Mürren sports center, and the Victoria-Jungfrau's large spa in Interlaken, about 20 minutes away by train.
Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa
Interlaken · Bern (Bernese Oberland)
Why we picked it: Interlaken's landmark grand hotel with a 5,500 m² spa.
Check rates & availability →Practical tips
- Arriving: from Zurich, allow about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes by train, changing in Bern and Interlaken Ost. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the trains to Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren via Grütschalp, and the Schilthorn cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren; the upper sections are half price.
- Luggage in car-free villages: you can take your bags on the cable car and the train to Mürren or Wengen. Most hotels are a short walk from the station; ask yours if it offers a pickup by electric cart.
- Seasons: July, August and the Christmas and February ski weeks fill first. In late autumn and late spring, some hotels close and the lifts to Mürren have maintenance breaks, so check before you book.
- Guest card: when you stay overnight and pay the local visitor tax, your hotel gives you a guest card with local discounts. Check the details for your village on jungfrauregion.swiss.
Our honest take
For a first visit of two or three nights, book Lauterbrunnen village: it's the cheapest and best-connected base, with the falls out the door. If the budget allows one splurge, spend it on a night or two in Mürren for the view across the valley at sunset. Choose Wengen if Jungfraujoch and the Männlichen trail are your priorities. Fill your days with our things to do in Lauterbrunnen, start with the easy Mürren to Gimmelwald walk, and if you're still choosing a base for the region, compare with where to stay in Grindelwald and where to stay in Interlaken.
