Bern Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Map & Where to Stay

Bern is the Swiss capital most visitors skip, and in December that's a mistake. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with about six kilometers of covered stone arcades, so even in rain or sleet you can wander from market to market with dry shoulders. It's less polished than Zurich and more local.
Map: Bern's Christmas markets and the hotels around them

The markets
Münsterplatz — the pretty one
Right in front of the Gothic cathedral, this is the market for handmade gifts: wood, wool, candles, ornaments. Go late afternoon, then climb to the cathedral terrace for the view over the river Aare.
Waisenhausplatz — the lively one
Bigger, louder and more about food and drink. This is where Bern's office workers meet for a Glühwein after work, and the best place to feel like a local.
Sternenmarkt — Kleine Schanze
A more modern market with food trucks, bars and lights, and it stays open after Christmas (until December 27). The park terrace looks out to the Bernese Alps on a clear day.
Each market has its own dates. Sources disagree for Waisenhausplatz, so check the official Bern market website before you go.
A good afternoon in Bern
- Start at the station and walk down Spitalgasse, Marktgasse and Kramgasse under the arcades, with their cellar shops below street level.
- Stop at the Zytglogge clock tower at the top of the hour to watch the figures move.
- Do Münsterplatz before dark and Waisenhausplatz after.
- Finish at the Rosengarten viewpoint above the old town if the sky is clear.
What to eat
- Grittibänz: a sweet bread shaped like a little man, eaten across Switzerland around St. Nicholas Day (December 6).
- Marroni: roasted chestnuts, sold from street stands.
- Raclette and Glühwein: at every market.
Where to stay
The old town is compact. Stay anywhere between the station and the Zytglogge and you'll walk to all three markets. The map above shows live prices for your dates.
