Two markets, two moods
Lozärner Weihnachtsmärt — Franziskanerplatz (December 3–21)
This is the traditional one, on a square in the old town. It's small, local and unhurried, with candles, woodwork, cheese and Glühwein. Stalls are usually open from 11:00 to 20:00, with food until 21:00, and close earlier on the last day.
Rudolf's Christmas — by the lake (November 20–December 23)
A separate, livelier market on the lakefront, open later in the evening (until 22:00 Monday to Saturday). On weekdays only part of it opens before the afternoon, so come after 16:00.
The perfect Lucerne Christmas day
- Morning: take the boat to Vitznau and the cogwheel train up the Rigi. Lucerne often sits under a lid of fog in winter, while the Rigi is above it in the sunshine.
