How to do Basel's market in one evening
Start at Barfüsserplatz
It's the biggest square and the easiest to reach: most trams stop right there. This is the busy, buzzing part of the market, with crafts, ornaments, food stalls and a lot of Glühwein.
Walk up to Münsterplatz
Take the lanes uphill for about five minutes. Münsterplatz, in front of the cathedral, is calmer and more romantic, and it's where families find the Märchenwald, a small fairy-tale forest for children (until December 22). Step behind the cathedral to the Pfalz terrace for a view over the Rhine in the dark.
Cross the Rhine for dinner
If you're still hungry, cross the river to Claraplatz in Kleinbasel, where the food stalls stay open into the evening (weekdays from 17:00 to 22:00). In daylight, cross by one of Basel's little rope ferries, pushed across by the current.
After Christmas
The main market closes on December 23. The Basler Wienachtsdorf on Theaterplatz keeps going until January 3, 2027, which helps if your trip runs over the holidays.
What to eat and bring home
- Basler Läckerli: the city's spiced honey-and-almond biscuit. Buy a tin to take home; they keep for weeks.
- Raclette and roasted chestnuts: at almost every corner of the market.
- Handmade ornaments: Barfüsserplatz has the widest choice.
