Short answer

Stay in Lucerne's old town or right by the station for the easiest base: the Chapel Bridge is about 5 minutes on foot from the trains, and the lake boats leave in front of the station. The lakefront along the Schweizerhofquai and Haldenstrasse is the classic choice for lake views, while Weggis, Vitznau and the Bürgenstock are quieter lake retreats about 30 minutes to an hour away by boat.

Lucerne is small, and that's the good news: almost every hotel in the center is within a 15-minute walk of the station. The real choice is between the medieval lanes of the old town, the convenience of the station area, the grand hotels on the lake, or a slower stay in a village across the water.

Our quick picks

  • First visit, 2–3 nights: the old town, close to the Chapel Bridge.
  • Early trains and day trips: right by the station, where the lake boats also leave.
  • Couples and lake views: the lakefront along the Schweizerhofquai and Haldenstrasse.
  • Budget: a hostel in Tribschen, by the lake south of the station.
  • Hikers: Weggis or Vitznau, at the foot of the Rigi.
  • A spa splurge: the Bürgenstock, high above the lake.

The old town: for a first visit

The old town spreads along both banks of the Reuss, where the river leaves the lake. On the right bank are the painted squares, the Chapel Bridge and the Musegg wall with its towers; on the left bank, the quieter Kleinstadt runs toward the Jesuit Church. Restaurants with river terraces line the Rathausquai, and you can be on a lake boat 10 minutes after breakfast.

Stay here if: it's your first visit and you want to step out of the hotel straight into the postcard.

Skip it if: you're a light sleeper and your room faces the river promenade, which stays busy on summer evenings.

By the station and the KKL: for day trips

Lucerne's station sits right on the lake, with the KKL concert hall next door and the boat piers out front. Staying here makes sense if you plan a different day trip every day, to the Rigi, Pilatus, Engelberg or Interlaken, or if you're arriving late from Zurich Airport. The streets behind the station, in the Neustadt, are where locals eat and drink, and prices are often a little lower than in the old town.

The lakefront: for views and a sense of occasion

East of the old town, the Schweizerhofquai and then Haldenstrasse follow the lake past the grand hotels of the 19th century. This is the Lucerne of old travel posters: plane trees, steamers at the pier and Mount Pilatus across the water. The Schweizerhof is the closest to the station, about 5 minutes on foot across the bridge. The Mandarin Oriental Palace is about 10 minutes' walk from the old town and has a spa. Up the hill behind it, the Art Deco Hotel Montana has its own tiny funicular from the lakeside promenade up to the lobby.

Stay here if: it's a special trip and you want the lake outside your window.

Tribschen: the budget option

Tribschen is the quiet residential district south of the station, along the lake toward the Richard Wagner Museum. There's not much to do in the evening, but it's calm, it's by the water, and it's where you'll find one of the city's simplest beds. It's about 15 minutes on foot from the station.

Budget

Backpackers Lucerne

Lucerne

Why we picked it: Simple hostel by the lake in the Tribschen area, about 15 minutes' walk from the station, with a shared kitchen and 2- or 4-bed rooms.

Weggis and Vitznau: at the foot of the Rigi

Across the lake, Weggis and Vitznau are lake villages with a mild climate and the Rigi rising behind them. The boat from Lucerne takes about 45 minutes to Weggis and about an hour to Vitznau, where the rack railway climbs to Rigi Kulm in about 30 minutes. Stay here if you want to hike, and if you're happy to plan your evenings around the boat timetable. Our Rigi Kulm to Kaltbad hike starts at the top of that railway.

The Bürgenstock: the spa splurge

The Bürgenstock resort sits high on a cliff above the lake, on the far shore from Lucerne. You get there by boat from Lucerne to Kehrsiten, then by the Bürgenstock funicular, which runs all year. The resort's Alpine Spa has an infinity pool over the lake. It's a destination in itself rather than a base for sightseeing; the last funicular means you'll want to dine at the resort.

Bürgenstock Hotels & Resort

Bürgenstock · Nidwalden

Why we picked it: Clifftop resort with a 10,000 m² Alpine Spa and an infinity pool over Lake Lucerne.

Practical tips

  • Arriving: from Zurich main station, direct trains take about 45 to 50 minutes, every 30 minutes. From Zurich Airport, allow about an hour.
  • Visitor Card Lucerne: if you stay overnight and pay the local visitor tax, your hotel gives you a free card. Guests in the city of Lucerne or Kriens ride local buses and trains in zone 10 for free. Boats aren't included.
  • When to book: summer and the Lucerne Festival weeks fill fast, as do the weekends of the Christmas market.

Our honest take

For a first visit, book the old town or a hotel by the station: Lucerne is a city you see on foot and from the boats, and both start right there. Splurge on the lakefront if it's a special trip, and save the lake villages for a second visit or a hiking week. If you're still deciding between Lucerne and the Jungfrau region as a base, read our Interlaken vs Lucerne comparison, and for more spa stays around the lake, see the Lucerne spa hotels. Lucerne is also an easy stop on our Switzerland itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Lucerne?

The old town, on either side of the Reuss, or the streets right around the station. Both keep the Chapel Bridge, the lake boats and the trains within a few minutes' walk, which matters because most Lucerne days start with a boat or a train.

Is it better to stay in Lucerne or in a lake village like Weggis?

Lucerne for a first visit or a short stay, since every train and boat starts there. Weggis or Vitznau suit a slower trip with the Rigi in mind: the boat from Lucerne takes about 45 minutes to Weggis and about an hour to Vitznau, where the Rigi railway starts.

How do you get from Zurich Airport to Lucerne?

By train, in about an hour. There are connections every 30 minutes, some direct and some with a change at Zurich HB. From Zurich main station, direct trains take about 45 to 50 minutes.

What is the Visitor Card Lucerne?

A free card for overnight guests who pay the local visitor tax. Your hotel sends it before arrival or hands it over at check-in. Guests staying in the city of Lucerne or Kriens ride local buses and trains in zone 10 for free, and get discounts on some mountain railways and museums. Lake boats aren't included.

How many nights should I spend in Lucerne?

Two to three nights. One day for the old town and a lake cruise, one for the Rigi or Pilatus, and a spare day in case the mountains are in cloud.
