Zurich Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Map, Hours & Where to Stay

Zurich in December smells of roasted chestnuts and Glühwein, and most of it happens within a 20-minute walk of the main station. If you land at Zurich airport, you can be holding a hot mug at a market about an hour later. No other Swiss city makes it that easy.

The markets, in the order to walk them
1. Polarzauber — inside Zurich Main Station
Start here, especially on arrival day. The market fills the station's great hall, so it's warm and dry whatever the weather, and you can leave your suitcase in a locker a few steps away. It's busy and a little commercial, but it's the easiest first taste of Swiss Christmas: ornaments, candles, cheese, and the first Glühwein of the trip.
2. Bahnhofstrasse — the light show between markets
Walk down Bahnhofstrasse towards the lake. The street's Christmas lights hang overhead for most of its length, and after dark it's one of the prettiest city walks in Switzerland. Window-shopping at Swiss watch and chocolate boutiques is free.
3. Münsterhof — the old-town square
Turn left towards the Fraumünster church. Münsterhof is a smaller, calmer market with more craft stalls. This is where to buy gifts that don't come from a factory.
4. Bellevue Noël — by the lake and the Opera House
Finish at Sechseläutenplatz, in front of the Opera House, where the lake opens up. Go at dusk, when the lights reflect on the water. It's also the best spot for dinner at the stalls.
What to eat and bring home
- Marroni: hot roasted chestnuts in a paper cone. Cheap, perfect for cold hands.
- Raclette: melted cheese scraped onto bread or potatoes, sold at most markets.
- Tirggel: Zurich's thin, hard honey biscuits with pressed pictures on top. A local tradition and an easy gift to pack.
- The mug: your Glühwein comes in a mug with a small deposit. Return it, or keep it as a souvenir.
