Short answer
The smartest value hotels in Switzerland are in the cities and at the airports, where most trips start and end. In Zurich, Motel One is the best budget base in the center and Mama Shelter the most fun; at Zurich Airport, the Capsule Hotel is the cheapest bed and the Radisson Blu the most convenient. In Geneva, the B&B HOTEL Geneva Airport has a free airport shuttle. In Basel and Bern, hotel guests ride city transport for free.

Here's a little secret about Swiss travel budgets: the expensive nights are in the mountains, not the cities. Zermatt, Wengen and Lucerne in summer will test your credit card. Your first night after a red-eye and your last night before an early flight don't need to.
These are the hotels we'd book for the practical nights of a Swiss trip: arrival, departure, a city stopover, or a concert at the Hallenstadion. None has a spa (for that, see our spa hotels by canton), but every one is clean, well-connected and sensibly priced for Switzerland.

The "soak by night" bonus: the Hürlimannbad thermal baths, with their rooftop pool, are a short tram ride or about 20 minutes on foot further up the same street.
Motel One Zürich
