Geneva sits at the tip of Lake Geneva, and the railway follows the shore all the way to Montreux. That makes it one of the easiest Swiss cities for day trips: in an hour you can be in a lakeside castle, a terraced vineyard or a Belle Époque resort, and back in town for dinner.

Here are the best day trips, ordered by how far they are from Geneva Cornavin.

Our quick picks

  • Half day, 10 to 15 minutes: Nyon and Coppet, for a Roman town and a lakeside château.

  • Cheese and chocolate: Gruyères.

1. Nyon and Coppet (10 to 15 minutes)

The regional trains reach Coppet in about 10 minutes and Nyon in about 15. In Coppet, the Château de Coppet, home of the writer Germaine de Staël, is open for guided visits in the afternoon from April to October. In Nyon, walk up from the harbor to the white castle and the Roman Museum, built over the foundations of a Roman basilica, then come back along the lakefront promenade. Both towns are on the same line, so you can do them in one afternoon.

2. Lausanne (35 to 45 minutes)

Fast trains run several times an hour. Lausanne is built on a steep hillside, so ride the metro up from the station to the old town and walk down. See the Gothic cathedral, where a night watchman still calls out the hours from the tower in the evening, then take the metro down to Ouchy on the lake for the Olympic Museum and a walk along the quays. It's an easy day with plenty of time for lunch.

3. Yverdon-les-Bains (about 50 minutes)

Direct trains reach Yverdon, at the southern tip of Lake Neuchâtel, in about 50 minutes. The town has been a spa since Roman times, and the thermal center, with indoor and outdoor pools, is a short bus ride or a 20-minute walk from the station. It's the easiest spa day from Geneva, and a good rainy-day plan. Walk the small old town and its castle before you soak.

4. The Lavaux vineyards (about 1 hour)

East of Lausanne, the Lavaux terraces drop straight into the lake and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the train to Lausanne, then a regional train to Cully or Lutry, and walk the marked paths between the villages. Most cellars open for tastings on weekends from spring to autumn. Our Lavaux vineyard hike has the route, the best stretch and where to taste.

5. Montreux and Chillon Castle (1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes)

This is the classic Geneva day trip. Walk the flower-lined lakefront to the Freddie Mercury statue, then continue to Chillon Castle, a medieval fortress built on a rock in the lake. The walk takes about 45 minutes; otherwise, bus 201 reaches the castle in about 10 minutes, or a local train goes to Veytaux-Chillon. Allow two hours inside. Come back by boat to Vevey or Lausanne in summer and take the train from there.

In winter, Montreux hosts one of the most popular Christmas markets in Switzerland: see our Montreux Christmas market guide.

6. Annecy, France (about 1 hour by bus)

Annecy, with its canals, flower boxes and a lake so clear it looks tropical, is only about 40 km (25 mi) south of Geneva, but it's in France. Direct buses from Geneva take about an hour; the train is slower, with a change in Annemasse. Walk the old town along the Thiou canal, see the Palais de l'Isle, then rent a bike or a pedal boat on the lake. Bring your passport or ID card, and note that Swiss rail passes aren't valid on the French side.

7. Gruyères (1.5 to 2 hours)

The train usually changes at Palézieux and Bulle; the last leg to Gruyères station takes about 10 minutes. From the station, walk up to the hilltop village (about 15 minutes) for its castle and the HR Giger Museum, then come back down to La Maison du Gruyère, a show dairy where you can watch the cheese being made. Have fondue in the village. If you have time, continue to Broc for the Cailler chocolate factory, or to Charmey for the Bains de la Gruyère.

8. Chamonix and Mont Blanc, France (2.5 to 3 hours)

The Léman Express runs from Geneva to Saint-Gervais, where you change to the Mont-Blanc Express to Chamonix. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours each way by train, which makes it a long day; by car or shuttle bus, it's about 1 hour 15 minutes. Ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car on a clear morning for a close view of Mont Blanc. Bring ID, and check the lift's weather webcam before you go.

Soak after

Three thermal baths make good spa days from Geneva. The thermal center in Yverdon is the closest, and the Grand Hôtel des Bains is connected to it. Lavey-les-Bains, south of Montreux, has the warmest thermal water in Switzerland and is an easy add-on after Chillon. Les Bains de la Gruyère, in Charmey, have outdoor pools facing the Fribourg Pre-Alps. Our thermal baths guide compares them all.

Tickets: Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass

If you live in Switzerland, the Half Fare Card cuts every Swiss fare in this guide in half, and Saver Day Passes bought early can be cheaper still. If you're visiting, the Swiss Travel Pass covers the trains, the Lake Geneva boats and most buses, with free or reduced entry to many museums, including Chillon. It does not cover the French part of the trips to Annecy and Chamonix. Our Swiss Travel Pass vs Half Fare Card guide helps you decide.
